The episcopal city of Würzburg with its approximately 135,000 inhabitants is the seat of the government of Lower Franconia and can rightly be called the wine capital of Franconia. The fate and prosperity of the city and its population has been linked to a large extent to the ups and downs of the annual wine harvest over the centuries.

Würzburg is not only the city closest to vineyards - it is also a city that is famous for its excellent locations! Goethe wrote in a letter to his wife Christiane about the Würzburg stone: "No wine pleases me and I am annoyed when I miss my favorite drink." The most famous wineries in Würzburg include Staatlicher Hofkeller, the Juliusspital winery and the Bürgerspital winery.

The oldest wine that is still drinkable is a stone wine from 1540, which is stored in the Bürgerspital.
