From Zörbig to Carlsfeld 45 hours, to Dresden 31 ½ hours the names of a total of 79 towns, some of them without an hour, are carved into the four sides of the stone obelisk-shaped column on the north side of the Zörbig market square. This monument is an Electoral Saxon distance column, or rather a copy of such a distance indicator from the 1830s. The original was lost. At that time, all of the places listed here could be reached from Zörbig via direct road connections or convenient connecting roads.

A post office was set up in Zörbig at the end of the 17th century. The hourly measurement indicated on the distance column refers to the Saxon mile of 9.062 km. 2 hours made 1 mile.

August the Strong found great interest in this project and issued the corresponding ordinance in 1721. In addition to the distance columns, which show the total distances from a starting point to various destinations, there are full-mile columns, half-mile columns and quarter-milestones. A total of 176 postal mileposts stood in Saxony. The distance columns were provided with the Electoral Saxon and, since the Saxon Elector was also King of Poland, the Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms at the corner and on all four sides. The royal monogram AR (Augustus Rex) confirmed the electoral postal sovereignty. All distance columns had a square base, a center piece and a pyramid-shaped top. The Zörbig distance column was built after 1730. The exact location can no longer be determined, but it can be assumed that it was near the current copy on Zörbig's most important street and at approximately the same distance from the former city gates.
