After the bridge over the Rhine, take the Rheinradweg / Rheindamm in the direction of Vaduz (Lichtenstein). Great view of the Alps. The cycle path leads directly along the Rhine and is asphalted along the entire route.

The old bridge has now been almost completely demolished, but the paths leading to the new bridge are not yet complete. Everything is scheduled to be completed in fall 2023.

The new bridge will be 255 meters long and approximately 25 meters wide, with two lanes, a separate bus lane, and separate pedestrian and bike paths on either side.

Many of the photos of the old bridge are therefore nostalgic and no longer current.

The Alpine Rhine has always been subject to severe flooding with extensive inundation. Between 1894 and 1900, as part of the Rhine regulation project, a new riverbed was created with the Fußacher Durchstich (Footach Cut) and the Swiss Road was constructed.

The Hard–Fußach Rhine Bridge, built for this purpose between 1898 and 1899, was a 255 m long steel truss bridge with a Schwedler girder over the 90 m wide main opening and three smaller, approximately 27 m long semi-parabolic girders over the western and eastern foreland. A special feature was the roadway deck constructed by Joseph Melan, consisting of a series of arches.[1][2]

In 1971, it was replaced by a steel solid girder bridge, also 255 m long. Although it has a slightly larger span, one of the piers is located in the central channel.

Bridge inspections in 2005 and 2011 revealed the poor structural condition of this bridge. It neither meets the evolving flood protection requirements nor the traffic requirements of increased traffic. It is used by 15,000 vehicles daily. Up to 4,300 cyclists cross the bridge every day on the Lake Constance cycle path. Investigations revealed that renovating and adapting the bridge to meet these requirements would be uneconomical. Therefore, in 2010, the Vorarlberg state government decided to prepare plans for a new construction.
