The University or rather the University of Groningen is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands.

Here was taught until about 1876 exclusively in Latin and was founded in 1614 in.

Today, about 30,000 students are enrolled in the bachelor and master programs of the nine faculties (as of 2016), and another 775 are working on a doctorate. Every year, they leave about 2,500 with an academic degree. The University of Groningen is the third largest university in the Netherlands after the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. The Groningen University Library is the second largest university library in the Netherlands after Leiden. The University of Groningen is one of two Dutch members of the Coimbra Group besides Leiden University.
