In 1894, Groningen got its own 'Groninger Museum of Antiquities'. The building then only consisted of the current west wing and adjacent entrance. For his design, the Groningen architect C.H. Peters chose the Neo-Gothic style, with deep-set windows and figurative symbols. The building soon proved to be too small and was expanded with a south and north wing in 1902 and 1907.

In 2009, the former museum was purchased by the Hanze University of Applied Sciences to house part of the Minerva Academy. After the purchase, the building was thoroughly renovated and renovated. A number of original monumental parts have come into view again.
