The Coronation Cathedral of Alba Iulia, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built with the support of the Romanian royal family between March 1921 and September 1922 according to the plans of the architect Victor Ștefănescu. Its Byzantine-style architecture is inspired by the Royal Church of Târgoviște, the ancient coronation site of the Wallachian voivodes. The coronation ceremony of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria as rulers of Greater Romania took place in the courtyard of this church on October 15, 1922, following a solemn mass in the cathedral. On December 1, 1948, following the ban on the Romanian Church united with Rome, a ceremony for the "Reunification of the Romanian Orthodox Church" was held here. The name of the church was changed to "Cathedral of the Reunification of the Romanian Orthodox Church." Since 1975, the place has served as the cathedral of the Orthodox Diocese of Alba Iulia.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral (Romanian: Catedrala Sfânta Treime), nicknamed the Cathedral of the Reunification of the Nation (Catedrala Reîntregirii Neamului, so since 1948) or Coronation Cathedral (Catedrala Încoronării, until 1948)[1] in the Romanian county town of Alba Iulia (Karlsburg), is the episcopal church of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Alba Iulia.
The neo-Byzantine central building with main and side domes, a 58-meter-high bell tower and a surrounding rectangle of residential, meeting and administrative buildings was built in 1921–1923 according to plans by Victor Gheorghe Ștefănescu in the immediate vicinity of the Roman Catholic St. Michael's Cathedral after Transylvania had become part of Romania as a result of World War I. The annexation of Transylvania is also referred to as reunification in Romanian historiography, since the three countries of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania had already been united for a short time under Mihai Viteazul in 1600.
