At the bird observation tower there are two informative boards about the bird species found here and the Glender meadows. The latter is a protected area of national importance. Informative and definitely worth reading.

The nature reserve “Bird Sanctuary Glender Wiesen” has existed since 1989. It is one of the few large wet meadow areas still existing in Upper Franconia. With the construction of the Goldbergsee to expose the city of Coburg to floods, large areas of the nature reserve were flooded in 2010. In addition to the biotope lake in the nature reserve was created south of the Grundsee railway line. New habitats, especially for waders and water birds, have been able to develop since then. The northern part of the Grundsee, like the nature reserve, is also an EU bird sanctuary.
The Glender Wiesen area is now one of the most important meadow breeding areas in Upper Franconia.

It also has supra-regional importance for the nationwide and cross-border biotope network. The newly created water areas of the Goldbergsee complement the diversity of habitats. Many rare animal and plant species that have even disappeared elsewhere can be observed here.
