        The monument shows the prince-consort in the regalia of a Knight of the Order of the Trousers. In his hands he holds the blueprint for London's Crystal Palace, a building he designed himself for the first World's Fair in London in 1851, and a marshal's baton.

        The larger-than-life statue, cast in bronze, was made from a model by the English sculptor William Theed the Younger.

          Prince Albert always has a good view of what is going on at the market. The weekly market in Coburg takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, always in the morning until around 1:00 p.m. on the market square. Cut flowers as well as garden and balcony plants are offered at various stands throughout the year. Depending on the season, there are strawberries, asparagus, pumpkins or cherries that compete with the fruit and vegetables that are available all year round at the stalls. The weekly market is a colourful, fragrant trading place for bread and sausage products, cheese, eggs and fresh meat. Almost all the goods on offer come from the region. All of Coburg meets here to get hold of the loveliest tulips, to buy groceries or simply to have a chat. Every Saturday there is also a farmer's market in Steinweg, where local direct producers sell their products from the region.

            Franz Albrecht August Karl Emanual of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the little brother of Ernst II, who ruled the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for almost 50 years.

            In the summer of 1836 he met his cousin Victoria for the first time while visiting London. She soon fell in love with the young prince from Coburg and wrote in a letter to her uncle King Leopold about her first prospect of "great happiness"

              When the prince stayed in London again on October 10, 1839, Victoria asked for his hand in marriage just five days later. The wedding took place on February 10, 1840.                     Albert, Prince Consort of Great Britain and Ireland lived from 1819 to 1861. He was the second son of Duke Ernest I. In 1840 Albert married his cousin Queen Victoria of Great Britain, an example of the successful marriage policy of the House of Coburg. Victoria's mother came from the House of Coburg, she was a sister of Ernest I and married the British Duke Edward of Kent.
                    The first meeting between Albert and Victoria was arranged by Albert's uncle Leopold, King of the Belgians.
                    Albert's life's work was to create social improvements for the people, technical progress for the economy and freedom for art. His goals were concentrated on the World Exhibition, which took place in London in 1851 and brought him many triumphs. Albert died in 1861, his death paralyzed the whole country. Victoria mourned until the end of her life and tried to decide what Albert would have wanted. In the presence of Queen Victoria and her children, the statue of Albert was ceremoniously inaugurated on the Coburg market square in 1865. It shows Albert in the robes of a Knight of the Garter. In his right hand he holds the plan of the Crystal Palace, the symbol of the new England.
