Normannstein Castle is impressively situated high above the town of Treffurt and offers magnificent views over the old town and the Werra Valley.

The castle complex is well restored and can be walked around in a circle.

The direct ascent from Treffurt to the castle has about 2.5km. There is a barrier-free access to the castle. The castle itself houses apartments, a wedding room as well as a restaurant, which is recommended! Solid ambience, fresh preparation and moderate prices! And warm hosts + staff!

Normannstein Castle above Treffurt can be nicely integrated into a circular hike. The best way to explore them is via the path from the Normannstein spring up to the castle. It is also possible to get to the castle from the hiking car park above the castle (ARS Natura "Hand").
The old, extensively renovated walls await you with an exhibition, restaurant and two wedding rooms.

Normannstein Castle was carefully renovated in the 2000s. Since then you can dine here again in the restaurant and visit the castle museum. Here is the permanent exhibition "Werraburgen und Wertfurten", where you can learn a lot about the numerous knight's castles and about the Middle Ages. When visiting the museum, it is also worth climbing up to the viewing platform on the keep.

Normannstein Castle was founded in the 9th century. The oldest part is the rounded keep, which was originally a watchtower. The Lords of Treffurt established their castle around this around 1200. Just 100 years later, however, they became robber barons and plundered the surrounding area. This led to a siege of the Bishopric of Mainz and the Houses of Thuringia and Hesse. The Lords of Treffurt were defeated and expelled in 1333. Just three years later, however, they returned – so they were besieged and expelled again. Afterward, the castle was occupied and run by officials from all three factions. However, these officials moved directly to the town of Treffurt in the 16th century. Each of them founded their own castle there, so the original castle fell into disrepair. The term "Normannstein" only appeared when the castle was already a ruin. In 1894, an inn was built there.

The castle was rebuilt and used as a youth club during the GDR era. The castle is currently empty, awaiting a new tenant.

For this reason, the exhibition in the square keep and the observation tower are currently closed. However, the castle grounds are open to the public. The castle elevator is also in operation.

The Touringen stamp can be obtained on the north side outside the castle.
