in 1979 The sculpture "Geldutė" was built in the center of the town of Vepriai, the sculptor is Viktoras Žentelis, created based on the motives of the story about the Duchess Geldutė.
Legend has it that Duke Gelvainis ruled the Vepriau Castle, from whose windows you could see the meandering Vepriau Lake. His daughter Geldutė was the most beautiful in the whole neighborhood, she loved them very much and visited them often. At the lake, she even made friends with fairies and played with them. When her father went to war, he entrusted Geldute to the guardianship of the fairies, at the same time presenting them with his daughter's dowry chest, full of all kinds of riches. However, due to a conflict between the fairies, when the evil fairies became jealous of Geldutė, the villains decided and cast a spell on the sleeping maiden at home so that she would live in their abode - at the bottom of the lake. To prevent her from escaping, they chained Geldute along with her dowry chest to a long chain. Only at midnight was she allowed to get up and ring the bells.
