Fort Faidherbe was built in just ten days by Commander Faidherbe (also the founder of the city of Saint-Louis in Senegal) and inaugurated on October 10, 1853, on the northwest shore of the Ébrié lagoon, following the expedition of Rear-Admiral Auguste Baudin, who commanded the West African Coast Squadron. It then had the dual purpose of protecting the area from English ships and controlling trade in the lagoon. It was also a question of monitoring the Jack-Jacks and Boubourys tribes, with which the French had made trade agreements.
At that time, in the second half of the 19th century, the French did not aim to control the hinterland of Côte d'Ivoire but limited themselves to securing maritime trade between the coast of the lagoons and Europe. continental. Thus, Fort Faidherbe was an essential point of support in the development of maritime trade (oils, cocoa, sugar, wood, coffee, etc.) between Dabou and Grand-Bassam.
Originally, the surrounding wall was 6 meters high and its central staircase opened onto a terrace serving the four faces of a square with approximately forty meters on each side. Today the main building is about 20 meters wide9.

The fort also had an execution center, a place of imprisonment and execution of political opponents or violent criminals. These prisoners were chained in one of the cellars of the fort and then shot by a soldier hiding in one of the garages which served as a bunker. The execution was carried out through two small holes in the wall of this garage which allowed the ends of the guns aimed directly at the victim to pass.
