The Cistercians built the monastery in the immediate vicinity of the Salzach springs. They dammed the watercourse east of the monastery with a dam to the deep lake. Regulated by a weir, the Salzach falls almost 10m deep into the Zwingergraben and, as an underground stream, disposes of the waste and sewage from the monastery area.

The surrounding wetlands were drained into the Salzach through an extensive system of ditches. Reservoirs served as water reservoirs and fish ponds and thus also provided a source of food. The systems are largely reconstructed and, as far as they have been preserved, they still fulfill these functions today.
