The fortifications consisted of a triple wall and ditch system and an eight meter high Feldsteinstadtmauer with three city gates, two round towers and 42 Lughäusern.
What remains are the Bernau ramparts, ditches and the city wall with stone gate, hunger tower, powder tower and hints of the Lughäuser. In the past centuries, one has planted in the ramparts, which are a special feature in the Mark Brandenburg, the most diverse tree species. The city wall surrounding the city center is surrounded by a green belt. In 1884, the individual ramparts were officially named and were with
Chalkboards marked. To date, there are still seven out of eight city walls.

There is no reliable information about the time of origin. This is what August Wernicke said in his chronicle.

When Bernau was made a town in 1232, there was only a simple wall and moat, and probably a plank or palisade fence. Only later was a massive wall made of field stones built. At the same time, the walls and ditches were built.

The Bernauer were protected from the Quitzow`s (noble family) in 1402 and were able to withstand the Hussites in 1432. From this one concludes that at this time the ramparts and the city wall were fully developed and offered adequate protection.

The following are just a few of the ramparts:
1) the wall (approx. 285m),
2) The Hohe Wall (approx. 323m),
3) The Kirchhofswall (approx. 420m)
4) The Jungfernwall (approx. 400m),
5) The Kalandswall (approx. 150m),
6) The Berliner Wall (approx. 380m),
7) The Schützenwall (approx. 190m).

In the southern area of the city wall, between “Berliner Tor” and “Königstor”, the city was protected by the swampy meadow terrain. Therefore there was only one wall there, on the inside of which there was a ditch and on the outside the laid “Panke” flowed along.

The northern ramparts were mostly planted with proud oak trees. The southern part was planted not only with fruit trees, but also with vines. From around 1800 the ramparts were used more and more for promenades.
