The church was originally built of boulders and bricks around 1250, and was expanded over the next hundred years. The upper parts of the tower were completed in 1649. However, during the Swedish Wars, large parts of the church were blown up when Swedish horsemen plundered it and set fire to the gunpowder store in the attic. The church was rebuilt after the wars and restored in 1820. There may have been some kind of burial chamber beneath the church, built by Melchior Hvas, one of the lords of the nearby Hjortholm estate. His initials were on a confessional that no longer exists. Melchior Hvas reportedly made a living from piracy and could neither read nor write.
