The Sint-Michielskerk is the main church of Bree, dedicated to the patron saint St Michiel. The church is built in a neo-Gothic style. The choir, the nave up to the fourth pillar and the left cross arm date from 1452. Written sources from 1078 mention a stone Romanesque church. The enlargement to the current church took place in 1901-1902. The 45 meter high tower and the side aisles were only added to the church at that time. Since 1992, the church has been completely classified as a monument. In the church are a pieta from 1400, a beautiful calvary group, an entombment from 1530-1540. In honor of the Pieta, in 1676 the

brotherhood of Our Lady of Seven Woes. Since then, Marian feasts have been organized every 25 years. The last were in 1996, the next ones are in 2021.

Originally, there was a Romanesque church on this site, probably founded by the Count of Loon. In 1078, the patronage rights of this church were donated by Countess Ermengardis to the chapter of the Saint Bartholomew's Church in Liège.

In the mid-15th century, construction began on the church in Maasland Gothic style, first of all the choir, which probably dates from 1452. The nave dates from the early 16th century. The Romanesque tower was preserved. In 1506, a Saint Anne's chapel was built by order of Arnold van Mewen and his wife Aleydis Bormans, which forms the current southern transept arm.

In 1606, the spire blew over and damaged the Chapel of Our Lady, which had been built in 1469. The chapel and tower were restored. In 1831, the tower was again dilapidated and was restored. From 1901 to 1902 the church was enlarged, with the tower being demolished and a new one built, the nave being extended westwards by one bay, side aisles being added, as well as the northern transept arm and the sacristy.
