The front part of the canal is lined with beautiful palaces, such as the palazzo Gopcevich, built by a Serbian merchant, or the palazzo by Demetrio Carciotti, who came from Corfu. Countless commercial and residential buildings of old families that continuously expanded the wealth of Trieste.

The Grand Canal is the heart of the Borgo Teresiano. It leads from the shore road into the city at right angles and fits into the street-like streetscape of the neighborhood. The canal was built to allow merchant ships to enter the middle of the city and load and unload goods. Today, the waterway no longer appears in its original length and no longer fulfills its initial function: part of the canal was filled in for traffic. The swivel bridges have been replaced by fixed ones, so that today no sailing ships or large merchant ships, but only small fishing boats can navigate the canal.

Along the canal are the churches of Sant'Antonio Nuovo and SS. Trinità e San Spiridione, as well as the former private houses of merchants mainly from Greece and Serbia, such as Palazzo Carciotti, Palazzo Gopcevich and Palazzo Scaramangà.

There are numerous small cafes along the canal, although they are quite expensive. It's better to have an espresso in one of the smaller adjacent alleys.

There's a flea market here on Sundays.

The Grand Canal of Trieste is an artificial structure built in 1754 and designed by architect Matteo Pirona. It was created to allow boats to enter directly into the heart of the city, promoting maritime trade. It is located in the Borgo Teresiano, an urban area developed during the reign of Maria Theresa of Austria to modernize the city and strengthen its free port.

Originally, the canal was longer and reached Piazza Sant'Antonio Nuovo. Over time, part of it was filled in, reducing its current size. Today the Grand Canal is crossed by several bridges, including the Ponte Rosso, known for hosting the statue of James Joyce, who frequented Trieste. It is a symbolic place of the city, appreciated for its architectural beauty and for being a meeting and walking point.
