The construction work began in 1888, first the two still standing storage buildings were built with clinker facade. The 994 meters long and between 45 and 65 meters wide harbor basin of the trading port was completed in 1893. The quay consists mainly of heavyweight walls, in the northern part is a geböschtes provided with natural stone paving shore. At the end of the 19th century, the storage blocks GHI were built west of the harbor basin.

A special feature was the technical equipment with a steam system, which supplied a hydraulic system with pressure, the eleven mobile gantry cranes (with one to three tons carrying capacity), a lifting bridge (over the harbor entrance) as well as the stationary heavy load crane "elephant" (21 tons carrying capacity) moving. In addition, four mobile steam cranes (similar to the usual steam excavators) were in use. The port also had its own track system with a fleet of vehicles (locomotive, goods wagons) and its own tugboat to support the incoming cargo ships.
