The square was created in 1852, and is named after the Kungsporten, the main city gate that once guarded the fortified city’s moat. The bronze statue of King Charles IX dominates the square.

Many famous buildings line the square, such as the Stora Teatern theatre, and the nearby Palladium cinema. You can also hop onto one of the Paddam boat tours to explore the city and the surrounding areas from the canal.
