Ypres has been surrounded since the early Middle Ages.
The current structure of the fortifications is based on the work of the French fortification engineer Vauban, commissioned by the French Sun King Louis XIV, in 1678.
The current form is the result of the interventions of the Dutch fortification engineer Willem Lobrij (1773-1835) between 1815 and 1830.
From 1852 the city was demilitarized and the fortifications disappeared. About one third of the main walls also disappeared during this time and were replaced by a drainage ditch with a ring road on the inside and outside of the city, the current Wieltjesgracht.

An easily accessible footpath runs over the fortifications through greenery and along water.
