"... The Blankenberg castle ruins are located high above the Sieg.
On the Spornspitze, 80 m above the Sieg and within sight of the abbey on the Michaelsberg, the Lords of Sayn founded Blankenberg Castle around 1180.
The rock spur itself should initially have been free of settlement. The name Blankenberg was derived from him in the sense of a bare, unwooded elevation.
The fortifications high above the Sieg enabled the Counts of Sayn to control the entrances to the Siegtal and Bergisches Land as well as the Westerwald. The castle, one of the largest state castles in this part of the Rhineland, is a rectangular complex on a long ridge with an advanced heavy bastion.
During the 30 Years War the castle complex was almost completely destroyed. Remains of the hall, the gate house and sparse remains of a double chapel have been preserved. On the south side there is a mighty bastion tower from the 15th century, on the north side a round donjon. The outer bailey is also characterized by a strong round tower with a high shield wall and a gate tower. The castle complex can be visited from April to September Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday closed. Weather-related opening in March and October. ... "
