The round tower was built in 1477 and until the 19th century it served as a storage facility for gunpowder - just outside the city walls so that no one would be hurt if it exploded, but close enough so that you have it when you need it! Originally it had a flat roof, and it was only in the 18th century that it received the conical roof that you can still see today.For safety reasons, its function as a gunpowder depot was abandoned in 1752 and it was moved to a place outside the city in Gneixendorf (Ried Pulverturm), where an explosion disaster occurred in 1851.This "Lug ins Land", which can be seen from afar, is one of the landmarks of the city of Krems.
