The Fanefjord church is located in the southwest of the island of Mo on a small ridge and is visited every year by many interested because of their unique frescoes. Beautifully whitewashed with a red tile roof, the view from here extends over much of the Baltic Sea, Mön, Bogö and even South Zealand and Falster.

The church got its name from the sea bay of the same name. Fanefjord Bay, for its part, was named after a well-known monument not far from the church, the famous megalith Grönsalen, which is almost 100 meters long. Under the western stone rests the queen FANE, under the eastern her husband, the king GRÖN - Jaeger. (about 5,000 years ago).

The church itself was built around 1250 in the Junggotic style. However, only a single window has been preserved from this time, as the building was constantly expanded and rebuilt in later years.

It is known that at the time of construction of the Fanefjord church the community was made up of max. 300 people had passed. Such a small number of residents would normally never have built such a large church.
But the Fanefjord bay had a much greater importance in the time since there were enormous herring swarms. And so anchored here almost daily merchant ships from many regions, u.a. also ships of the Hanseatic League with very rich merchants and nobles. And they had a strong interest in building new churches and therefore supported the project with plenty of money and manpower.
Testimonies can be found in Bremen City Museum, and the consecration of the church was also in honor of the saint of the Hanseatic cities, St. Nicolaus.

The large, white church, perched on a hill at the eastern end of the Fanefjord, radiates from far away. The ceilings and walls are richly decorated with impressive medieval frescoes.
