There was already a primitive castle on this site in the 13th or 14th century. It was built by the Van Tongeren family, who ruled here from 1202 to 1383. No remains of this building have survived, but the large diameter of the current southeastern round corner tower shows that it was built on an older - round - structure. This is said to have concerned a five-story tower.

The castle and the outbuildings housed a catering business and an antique shop until recently, and classical concerts were regularly given in the main building. The castle was sold to the Flemish government agency (Toerisme Vlaanderen) in 2021 with the intention of renovating it and giving it a new use. By 2029 the castle will be visitable, a B&B and the park will be restored.

There is a castle in Belgium, northwest of Maasmechelen on the Meuse, which is also known as "Castle Vilain XIIII"; the last aristocratic resident of the castle was Louise Vilain XIIII, who was also related to Louis de Gand de Merode de Montmorency, Marshal of France.
