The former inner-German border, today the border between the state of Hesse and the Free State of Thuringia, is frequently crossed on this section.
The former states of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and the Electorate of Hesse (occupied by the Kingdom of Prussia since 1866) are documented on the old border stones.

This beautiful section of the Werra-Burgen-Steig X5 runs through the Rhäden and south of Obersuhl on a shady path along the border between Thuringia and Hesse. Historic boundary stones are witnesses of the past, the carved letters KP (Kingdom of Prussia) and GSW (Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach) refer to the former border residents.

The Werra-Burgen-Steig trail stays very close to Thuringia on this stretch. Here you can still see the character of the Green Belt, the barriers in front of it (in the form of ditches) and the actual border of the current state border between Hesse and Thuringia.
