Habkern's own mountain, the Augstmatthorn, is a proud 2,136 meters high. You can either ascend to the summit from Harder Kulm or from Habkern. The paths are easy to see, but narrow and partially exposed. Especially in the summit area of the Augstmatthorn, freedom from vertigo and surefootedness are required. A large colony of ibex lives on the steep slopes of the Augsmatthorn and the entire Brienz ridge. Especially in the morning and in the evening you have a good chance to watch the shy mountain goats.

You can extend the tour to Harder Kulm, but it does not make it more beautiful. Rock fans will find below the ridge on the way to the Roteschwand car park a beautiful limestone quarry, which impressively shows the brittle nature of the lime.

The Augstmatthorn is an impressive mountain in the Bernese Oberland, known for its breathtaking views and rich wildlife. At 2,137 meters high, the summit offers spectacular views of Lake Brienz, the surrounding Alps and, in clear weather, even as far as the Jura.
The hike to the Augstmatthorn often starts in Habkern or Lombachalp and leads along well-marked paths through a varied landscape. The trail is challenging and requires surefootedness, especially on steep and rocky terrain.
Once at the top, you will be rewarded with wide panoramic views and the opportunity to spot ibexes and other alpine animals.

Purely topographically and in terms of the municipality, the Augstmatthorn belongs to Ringgenberg and not to Habkern – and it is also not located in the "local mountain direction" of Habkern. For Habkern, the Trogenhorn (or the Hohgant area in general) is much closer. The Trogenhorn is Habkern's local mountain.
