The perforated stone from Erla/Haslach is located on a supposedly Roman watchtower road. The Lochstein stands on the Roman route to Weinberg and may have marked a north branching path or crossing point to a localized Burgus on the plateau edge of the site to the north. There is nothing left of an inscription that may have been placed earlier on the perforated stone. However, epigraphic milestones were not the rule, there were also unwritten milestones. The fact that the same type of perforated stones can also be found in Upper Austria speaks against the Roman origin. There you can often find them positioned on old roads, but the area is north of the Danube and therefore not in the Roman Empire.
