The Inner Alster is Hamburg's jewel and always worth a visit.

The white facades and copper-tiled roofs of the buildings surrounding the Inner Alster offer a truly unique panorama. It's not for nothing that the area around the Inner Alster is also called "Hamburg's living room."

You can shop your heart out at Jungfernstieg and Ballindamm, or enjoy the magnificent view of Hamburg's city center from the new Jungfernstieg promenade, and from the Lombardsbrücke bridge.

The Inner Alster may look like a lake, but it's the end of the 56-km-long Alster. The Inner Alster was dammed at what is now Jungfernstieg as early as 1235, more or less "by accident." Its big sister, the Outer Alster,

adjoins the lake directly behind the Lombardsbrücke bridge and is the most important recreational area in the city center.

The current reconstruction of the Jungfernstieg is currently a bit of a challenge for cyclists. As soon as the construction work is finished, the promenade will finally be what it was always meant to be - a place to relax with hopefully many cafés that invite you to linger.
