The house with its impressive half-timbered facades was built in 1489 by the harness maker Hans Grünewald. Around 1507, the well-known sculptor Veit Wirsberger bought it and became a neighbor of Albrecht Dürer.
The gable bay window, which can be seen from afar, was built in 1597. The Pilatushaus was badly damaged by an aerial mine during World War II, but was rebuilt in its old form before the end of the war. It is now leased to the Old Town Friends of Nuremberg.

The house, with its impressive half-timbered facades, was built in 1489 by the armor maker Hans Grünewald. In 1507, the renowned sculptor Veit Wirsberger purchased it, thus becoming a neighbor of Albrecht Dürer. During the Baroque renovation of 1693, the three facades were completely plastered, which was not removed until 1939. Of the later residents, Hans von Aufseß, the founder of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, was the most famous.
The city of Nuremberg acquired the building in 1941, during wartime. One year later, its rear side was severely damaged by an aerial mine detonated in front of the Imperial Castle. Before the end of the war, the damaged rear side, along with the completely destroyed neighboring house, was rebuilt in its original form.

The house has seven floors. The ground floor made of sandstone as a basement. Above this there are three half-timbered house and three attic floors. At the top of the gable there is a characteristic octagonal gable bay window with a concave curved pointed roof.

A corner figure between the sandstone ground floor and the half-timbered upper floor shows Saint George as the dragon slayer, the saint of knights and armorers. He was also the guild saint of the homeowner and plattner Hans Grünewald.
