The massive bastions by architect Antonio Fazuni have been rising from the moat behind Nuremberg Castle since 1545.
Unique in Germany at the time of their construction, the impressive structure attracted widespread attention and served as a model for many other cities.
This architectural monument, which remained largely intact during the Second World War, is a first-class example of Renaissance fortress construction in Germany.
Inside, steep stairs lead down to pointed barrel-vaulted, bullet-proof defensive passages deep beneath the bastions of the Imperial Castle, the casemates with their loopholes.
