Patrician house, built in 1827 as a private house complete with courtyard and coach house. Both the interior and the exterior still contain many elements from neo-classicism, a combination of late Louis XVI style and Empire.

Once upon a time, the heavy, wide entrance door served for crinoline ladies. The long marble corridor of more than 24 meters with pilasters and ceiling pieces with ornaments gave access to the former patrician residence of Jonkheer Jan Francois van Vrijberghe. Anyone who was a guest of this patrician was received in opulence and style. Empire style that is. This ornamental style, which became fashionable throughout Europe during the empire of Napoleon I, remained in use until about 1830 and is expressed through the use of elements from Egyptian and Roman architecture. The building testifies to this with: moldings in the facade, marble fireplaces with stucco decorations, carvings on and above doors, pendent mirrors with gilded frames, ceiling ornaments, double doors with carved edges and the use of motifs such as griffins. It is all still there and is now, after its restaurant by the current owners Bas and Ine de Voogd, in excellent condition.

'Noblesse oblige' must have thought when he built the building in 1827, on the place where 3 smaller houses once stood. Mr. Adrianus Hofferus (1589-1644), who was a renowned poet in his day, lived in one of those houses. Van Vrijberghe invested no less than € 85,000 for its construction, a fortune for that time! Now 170 years later, Bas and Ine have (almost) completely restored the building to its original state.

From 1867 to 1998, the property was owned by the state and used as a court or district court. The building was made suitable as a residence again in a renovation that took a year and a half. The house has a cellar, a parterre, two floors and an attic.
