The church building, completed in 1848, was named:
New Church and resembles a Roman temple
The Grote Kerk used to be on the same place, but it was unfortunately destroyed by a big fire in 1832.
In July 1835, two and a half years after the fire, work began on a new church. Because the architect, who had taken on the work, went bankrupt, construction was halted for a long time. The New Church was inaugurated in 1848. At the end of World War II, the church was damaged. Recovery followed, but complete restoration was inevitable.
The Reformed congregation, owner of the church, could no longer maintain the Nieuwe Kerk due to the heavy financial burden. The building was closed in 1971. The Nieuwe Kerk deteriorated visibly after windows were smashed and wind and rain were given free rein. A solution came in 1977.
The building was transferred to the Old Zeeland Churches Foundation. He had the building restored in phases, with financial support, in the years 1978-1988. As a fine example of 19th century ecclesiastical architecture, the Nieuwe Kerk is a special object in a monumental city such as Zierikzee. On April 16, 1988, the building was festively inaugurated.
Today, the Nieuwe Kerk is no longer a house of prayer, but serves as a Cultural Temple where many concerts are organized.
