The Pieter Boele was built in 1893 by the P. Boele shipyard in Slikkerveer in the style of the then common Rhine tugs. The tug served on the Rhine under the name “Speculant” until 1965.
In 1972 the ship was renamed after the name of the shipbuilder Pieter Boele. Since 1987, the ship has been kept in a working condition under the management of the “Dordt in Stoom” foundation with the help of approximately 25 volunteers.

The Pieter Boele steam tug is a historic Rhine steam tug dating from 1893, built at the Boele shipyard in Slikkerveer. She is moored in Wolwevershaven in Dordrecht and is still fully operational under steam – a unique feature in the world. The vessel is maintained by volunteers from the Dordt in Stoom Foundation and can be visited or booked for tours.
