          😎The Falkenstein was probably expanded and used as a castle watchtower from the middle of the 14th century. Like almost all of Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the Elbe, it belonged to the Hohnstein lordship with its seat in Hohnstein Castle, which the Bohemian noble family of Berka von Dubá had received as a Bohemian fief from Emperor Charles IV in 1353. As with the other rock castles in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, the castle watchtower buildings were made of wood. All that is still visible today are the beam supports, folds and steps cut into the rock. Also visible are channels cut into the rock to collect rainwater. The castle watchtower was mainly located on the rocky cliffs at the foot of the north side of the Falkenstein.

                The Falkenstein is one of the most impressive freestanding rocks in Saxon Switzerland, Saxony. It is located near Bad Schandau in the Schrammsteine, which it precedes. The massive rock is almost 100 meters high and is made of sandstone. In the Middle Ages, a castle watchtower stood on the Falkenstein – steps and timber grooves carved into the rock are still visible today.                             You can see how bark beetles, wind and snow damage, and the drought bring harmony with nature. The hike should not take the mountaineering trail, but rather the Elbleiten and Wenzel trails to the "Großer Backofen" (Great Oven).

                            The Earth's climate is moving toward a warm phase; humans can't change that! But hikers should behave in an environmentally conscious and nature-conserving manner.
