The year the first church was built in Kretzschau is not known. In earlier times it was a village chapel in which a so-called Laufpfaffe from the Benedictine monastery Posa in Kretzschau conducted the service. The Stephanskloster is said to have had patronage rights over the Kretzschau church as early as 1452. After the monastery was dissolved, the church came under the patronage of the monastery government. The letters H and G on the keystone of the choir room with the year 1520 identified the rich farmer Gellert as the donor of the sanctuary.
The church had to be closed in 1896 because of the danger of collapsing. In 1899 the structural condition was so bad that a new building was unavoidable. Demolition of the ruins began in the spring of 1900. The foundation stone for the new church was laid in November of the same year. At the end of 1901 the church was almost finished, so that on March 20th, 1902 the new church could be inaugurated by the Royal General Superintendent.
