This imposing baroque church dates from the 17th century. It can be found on Begijnhofplein, a place named after the beguines, a community of pious women who had been here since the 13th century. This half-secular, half-ecclesiastical institution proposed less strict rules of life than the classical abbeys. Women who were less wealthy were also allowed to join.

The current church stands on the site of a large Gothic church from the early 14th century. It was once surrounded by more than 1,000 houses, the homes of the beguines, and the beguinage extended over seven hectares!

Just like the facade, one of the most beautiful in Belgium, the interior has also been carefully decorated with a rich collection of baroque furniture.

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste-au-Béguinage, built in the Baroque style and dating back to the 17th century, is a remnant of the former Bigin farm. The church is a significant example of Baroque architecture. It now serves as a social gathering place and, occasionally, a film location.
