Around the middle of the 1960s, not far from the Honermann settlement in the city triangle Marl / Oer-Erkenschwick / Recklinghausen, the eighth shaft of the former colliery General Blumenthal was sunk in the north of the mining field. It lies at the foot of the Haard forest in the valley of Silvertbachs and was put into operation in 1967. The decommissioning took place in 2001 together with the remaining pit facilities of the mine.

Until the 1990s, an approximately 4-hectare mining dump was built next to the mine. After further expansion, the heap reaches now in the south to the newly created avenue Im Hampffeld. The area of the mine and the heaps of land became a gentle hilly landscape. In total, the area is now about 18 hectares.

From the heap you have a wonderful view of the northern Ruhr area and up to the Haard in the north. The moderate climb to the not very high heap is worthwhile for walkers and cyclists.
