The local recreation area "Mollbeck" (NG Mollbeck) in the north of Recklinghausen is an important, multifunctional ecosystem service provider for the Ruhr Festival City. The 320 hectare area is named after the "Mollbecke" stream, whose water properties have been largely lost due to over-printing since the 1920s. The 56 hectare core area of the Mollbeck district includes the following: the wooded toboggan hill, the Mollbeck valley, the Mollbeck forest, the "Herzlich" restaurant, the Mollbeck outdoor pool, the Mollbeck ponds. Land sealing (toboggan hill), enrichment and renaturation including pond silting (Mollbeck ponds) and the restoration of near-natural biotope structures in the entire core area enhance the open space and increase the habitat functions for animals and plants. In the long term, this ensures the balancing functions of the Mollbeck district for the nearby, highly densely populated inner city areas. The combination of barrier-free meeting places with modern exercise equipment for health care and nature education offers also increases the quality of stay and experience for those seeking local recreation.
