The Kasteel Stapelen in Boxtel, in the Dutch province of North Brabant, is known as a monastery and headquarters of the Dutch Assumptionists.

The name of the moated castle is a mystery. Different etymological dictionaries give different meanings for the word pile. It could mean, among other things, foundation or depot, but also column or church tower. In 1134 Stapelen was called the Stapelo, so the name is old, but a good explanation seems to be hidden in the mists of time.

There is a legend associated with Stacken Castle. Shortly before the year 1400, priest Eligius, who was celebrating mass in the chapel, spilled white consecrated wine on the altar cloth. A red stain appeared on this cloth, which could not be washed out. The priest kept this matter a secret until his deathbed, where he told it to the then lord of the castle Willem van Merheim. He was given permission by the clergy to show the cloths to the people, which eventually resulted in the procession of the Holy Blood in Boxtel, which is held annually on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Castles in the Meierij:
Many knights, counts and noble lords had fortified houses or fortresses in the Middle Ages. Especially in the Meierij there were hundreds of such castles. Only about 50 of these remain in North Brabant, including Heeswijk Castle in Heeswijk, Nemelaer Castle in Haaren and De Strijdhoef Castle in Udenhout. Each one is worth a visit.
