Castle Rock has been dubbed one of the "Eight Wonders of Kansas". Its magnificent chalk pillars were sculpted by erosion, as with the rest of the Castle Rock Badlands, though it is unknown why this structure stands alone. Currently there are three towering pillars; the fourth, smaller pillar adjoining the others used to be the tallest of the peaks until it collapsed during a storm in 2001.
It is possible to drive to the base of Castle Rock if you have a capable 4WD vehicle, but it is recommended to take care not to damage the fragile environment since it is so easily eroded.
