A gem of a district, authentic and evocative, with stone walls and wooden balconies; unlike those brutalized by plaster and giant stained-glass windows. Here, peace and harmony reign. A blast from the past. The bucolic scene at the back is beautiful, with the wooden bridge over the Leogra River and the steps leading up to the houses.

Every year, from December 24th to the last Sunday in January, the Bariola district becomes the magical setting for a nativity scene with more than 65 life-size figures, many with mechanical movements, modeled after local residents past and present. Scattered throughout the streets and houses of the town, among stables and pergolas, immersed in the rural historical context of the Venetian districts of the early 1900s, they represent traditional environments and daily crafts. Very evocative and a little unsettling, as automatons can be.
