The property was first mentioned in 1292 by Christian von Muthagen. After 1400 it belonged to a Gryn von Aldenhoven, 1452 to a Thewis von dem Balken and between 1460 and 1470 to a Seitz von Horrich. The owners in the 16th century were Qurin von Brempt (1515), Franz von Ferken (1593) and Adam von Hochkirchen (1593). In the 17th century, Wallraf von Schaellert (1608) and the von Hülsberg family (1618) appeared as owners. In 1740, Muthagen came into the possession of the Counts of Goltstein, who sold the estate to Mr. Fremery from Eupen in 1820. Later a Mr. Meyers is listed as the owner. Around 1873, Muthagen came into the possession of the magistrate and Prussian district administrator Bernhard Paul Friedrich Hugo von Scheibler and his family.
