Arnis was founded in 1667 by 65 families from the nearby town of Kappeln on the then uninhabited island in the Schlei.
Today it is an idyllic old fishing village with a lot of charm and a fantastic location directly on the Schlei.

Until the Middle Ages, the Schlei was the most important trade connection between the North and Baltic Seas. The Viking settlement of Haithabu was built in the sheltered far end. It is only rarely possible to cycle close to the shore. But often enough you can enjoy a wide view over the long, flat body of water, which looks more like a large inland lake than a river.
The best cycleable sections near the Schlei are between Kappeln and Arnis on the west side, between Arnis and Sieseby on the east side, and also between Schleswig and Louisenlund on the south side of the Schlei.
There are Schlei crossings in Missunde (ferry), Lindaunis (bascule bridge), Arnis (quaint little ferry) and Kappeln (New Schlei bascule bridge).
