The milestone stands in front of the oldest residential building in the city, the Kavalierhaus. It marks the intersection point of the historic salt road from Lüneburg via Gifhorn to Braunschweig with the historic grain road from Magdeburg via Gifhorn to Celle. The milestone shows the distances in old German miles from Gifhorn to Braunschweig (3.5 miles), Celle (5.5 miles), Lüneburg and Magdeburg (12 miles each). An old German mile corresponds to 7420.436 meters.
