On November 25, 1980, the original lookout tower was inaugurated.

Due to fire damage in 2018, the Idarkopf observation tower and the area around the tower were closed. Entering the cordoned off area was forbidden.

Since July 2020, 2 young men from Mörschied have been on trial.

€450,000 for the construction of the tower was anchored in the budget of the Herrstein-Rhaun National Park Association for 2021 and the award of the construction services was planned.

The old tower was demolished in March 22 and the completion of the prefabricated wooden tower with bird's nest is planned for May 22.

At the beginning of October 22, the tower with the bird's nest was already there, the steel staircase and visitor platform were still missing...

On December 4, 2022, the ceremonial inauguration with supporting program took place.

With the new construction of the tower, an intelligent hybrid construction made of wood and hot-dip galvanized steel was implemented. The plans came from the engineering office Miebach from Lohmar. The production was carried out by the company Schaffitzel Holzindustrie GmbH + Co. KG, Schwäbisch Hall. 3 glued laminated timber supports made of spruce wood, tapering towards the middle, serve as the main supporting structure. The new building with a height of 31.1 m should achieve a service life of 80 to 100 years. The steel staircase with its 170 steps offers 9 rest platforms up to the viewing platform. The viewing platform resembles a bird's nest.
