    The "Steinbachtalsperre"

    The water supply of the city of Idar-Oberstein and the region with approx. 4.5 million m³ of drinking water per year is ensured from the Steinbachtalsperre between Sensweiler, Langweiler and Katzenloch. In the dam, surface water from a catchment area of approx. 14.6 km² is collected and temporarily stored. The maximum storage volume is 4.8 million m³. The surface water is already quite clean and soft water (approx. 1.2 ° dH (total hardness-GH) To achieve drinking water quality, however, the dam water and spring water from the Allenbach-Hüttgeswasen area are used in the waterworks at the foot of the dam, near Katzenloch, subjected to water treatment. The water treatment takes place in the following essential treatment steps:
    - Hardening by means of carbon dioxide and calcium carbonate to approx. 3 ° dH
    - Flocculation with aluminum sulfate, demanganation with potassium permanganate
    - Filtration through open multi-layer sand filters

    - Disinfection with chlorine dioxide
