On the Petersberg, a small wooded elevation northeast of the historic city center of Goslar, are the remains of the collegiate church of St. Peter, which once represented the church of a monastery of the same name. The imposing columns balilika with western transept was built around the year 1050, the monastery itself is said to have been a foundation of Agnes of Poitou, the wife of the then German Emperor Henry III. At the nave, a massive tower complex was built in the second half of the 12th century. Legend has it that the builders prayed during the construction phase in the Marienkapelle in the nearby Klusfelsen.
The legendary building is said to be a large cavity. Allegedly, the former medieval emperors of the German Reich sit there at a banquet table. Once a playing girl picked a flower here, whereupon the mountain opened and revealed the view of these former rulers. When this news spread in Goslar, the people were convinced that the return of the former rulers and with them the "good old days" was imminent.
But the hope for the return of manageable and thus seemingly well-ordered conditions of the high medieval world remained unfulfilled. At the beginning of the modern era, the monastery and collegiate church were completely destroyed in 1527 by the citizens of Goslar. The former temple of the monks therefore presents itself in our day as an impressive ruins. The partially reconstructed foundations give the visitor an idea of the original dimensions and the location of the individual parts of the building.
The area surrounded by trees invites you to linger, in the environment there are several seats. You can reach the freely accessible church ruin on various routes from Klusfelsen or Klusteich on the outskirts of the city in a few minutes on foot.
