Ornate gates are unique to the Altes Land region. They are tourist magnets for good reason. Farmers in the Altes Land region had them built as status symbols since the end of the 17th century. The fertile marshland had brought the farmers great prosperity.

Ornate gates frame the former farm entrances. They are usually white, have a small hipped roof, and are decorated with colorful carvings. The roof rests on three supporting posts, which are supported by slanted beams. The carriage passage is often curved. A large cluster of grapes in the center of the arch represents fertility. Lion heads symbolize the protection of residents and harvest. There is a smaller passage for people.
