Three times a day, a cute couple in colorful costumes lures people to the bell playground. We are talking about the figures of the Graz Glockenspiel, who have been dancing to changing melodies high above the square since 1905.

The first carillon sounded on Christmas Eve.

The glockenspiel was set up by the spirits producer Gottfried Maurer, who acquired the house on what was then Fliegelplatz in the late 19th century. He knew glockenspiels from his visits to northern Germany and Belgium and accordingly had his own installed. After his death in 1929, he bequeathed it to the city on condition that it continue to operate.

Clever advertising measure

The idea behind the glockenspiel was not necessarily altruistic: it attracted customers to Gottfried Maurer's wine shop. After all, at the end of the carillon, the boy's figure toasted to the audience. The melodies to which the characters dance change several times a year and range from alpine songs to modern composers to Christmas carols.
