Charlemagne (748 - 814) chose Ingelheim as a base for his travels through his Frankish kingdom and had a representative palace built - that's what the seats of government were called at the time. In terms of importance, the imperial palace in Ingelheim is on a par with the palaces in Aachen and Nijmegen. World history was written in Ingelheim in the Middle Ages - with exclusive events such as coronations, imperial synods or abdications.
After Charlemagne, two handfuls of rulers used the Ingelheim Imperial Palace - it remained an important place of European politics and cultural history for over 300 years.

Ruins and restored remains, partly merged with residential buildings, reconstructions of the hall area, paved traces, information boards on the historical circular route that explain every relic that has survived or disappeared and thus make the past splendor understandable (guided tour recommended). In addition to the signage and accompanying booklet, there is the KAISERPFALZ APP, which is available free of charge in Google Play and in the AppStore (to be found under the keyword "Kaiserpfalz Ingelheim").

A MUST for every road cyclist who comes through Ingelheim; even the cobblestones in parts of the town are easily passable; the Imperial Palace is spread out somewhat in the town and you can easily cycle "along" it.
