Oestrich Wine Loading Crane (1744) - Oestrich/Winkel 🚴‍♂️

The old wine loading crane is the landmark of Oestrich. Built in 1744, it was in operation until 1926. Millions of visitors admire the old crane on the banks of the Rhine every year. It is the only surviving example of earlier technology used for loading and unloading ships on the Rhine. A simple, dark wooden cladding on the square structure conceals this technology from passersby. The crane was still in temporary operation until 1926. Its design is based on a 2,000-year-old technique that had already been used on construction sites during Roman times: Two powerful mill wheels, moved by the forward pedaling of two crane workers walking inside, pulled the loads upwards on chains. By rotating the movable upper part of the crane, to which the crane arm was attached, the loads could then be hoisted either onto a ship or from the ship onto land. In the past, Oestrich was primarily used to load wine barrels and tree trunks. The crane was built between April 1744 and February 1745. 170 cubic meters of sandstone had to be brought in for the massive foundation on which it rests. At that time, operating a crane was an archbishop's privilege, so only a few towns in the Rheingau enjoyed the right to operate such a facility. In the 15th century, only Eltville, Rüdesheim, and later Lorch possessed such a privilege. 🚴‍♂️
